It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arlington, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Jacksonville were the Caddo Indians. They built their first village on what is now known as Indian Field Road. The Caddos moved out of Jacksonville about 1827 and their village was destroyed by raiders in 1829. The first white person to live in Jacksonville was Denton Sills, who purchased land from the Caddoes around 1835. He started a store and named it "Sills' Store". A few years later he sold his interest in the store to John Moultrie and Samuel Hogg for $2,500 cashier's check or $10 per acre (valued then at $100). This purchase put Jacksonville on the map as a trading center for the surrounding area. In 1840 Nicholas Biddle bought land from Denton Sills and began developing it into what is now downtown Jacksonville. He named his development "Biddle's Landing" after Nicholas Biddle Sr., one of his investors in this project. By 1845 Jacksonville had become an important transportation hub with two trains coming into town each day from Memphis and Nashville; it also served as a stop on stagecoach routes between these cities and other nearby settlements such as Asbury Park and Arkadelphia. In 1850 Biddle sold his property to Jno Loring & Co., which became known as Loring Brothers & Company; this company developed most of downtown Jacksonville until 1911 when they merged with Murphy Oil Company to form Murphy Oil Corporation (later ExxonMobil). In 1912 physician Drs Charles Wertheimer and Julius Rosenthal founded Kessler Hospital Limited Partnership which became Kessler Hospital Incorporated (now medical group CompassHealth). From 1914 until its closure in 1984 Kessler Hospital was operated by four physicians: Drs Charles Wertheimer (President/CEO), Drs Julius Rosenthal (Chairman/Chief Executive Officer), Drs Paul Scherrer (Vice President/CFO)and Drs Eliot Coleman-Werth (Director of Research).
