Jacksonville, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 924 at the 2010 census. Jacksonville was founded in 1881 by Simeon Bemis and named for General Andrew Jackson. It became a city on December 3, 1907. The origins of Jacksonville are linked to the construction of the Great Western Railroad in 1881. A group of men from Jacksonville bought a piece of land north of town and began to build homes. The first house was built on what is now First Street. In 1886, Jacksonville became the county seat for Pulaski County after it was moved from Little Rock to its present location south of Interstate 30 and east of Interstate 25. The town grew quickly because of its advantages as a transportation hub; it had railroads running through it and access to markets in both directions (including Memphis). In 1907, Jacksonville submitted an application to become a city charter member with plans to attract businesses and residents who were relocated following the 1906 Cotton Belt Race riots which occurred in nearby Little Rock. On December 3, 1907, Jaguars applied for their own charter which they received unanimously. The move helped make Jacksonville one of Arkansas's most populous cities by 1910 (it had grown from being second-largest in 1911). In 1922, during World War I veteran Johnnie Hodges' home invasion robbery spree across Pulaski County that left 12 people dead or missing at his home near downtown Jacksonville; Hodges served time in prison before being released in 1923 Gainesville Federal Prison Camp just outside Ofalla where he met future Mayor James Tipton while serving time there together with other inmates including future governor Orval Faubus It wasn't until 1933 that Jaxon City Council placed gambling on the agenda after mayor James Tipton learned about organized crime activity taking place within his city limits The cotton industry declined beginning around 1930 due to new technology developed by Japanese farmers called "kamen" or "rice paddies". This led many Arkansans - especially older males - migrate out west looking for opportunities during this difficult time period . resulting into some large influxes into Jaxon over these years ..... most notably during WWII when over 60% percent of Jaxon's population services were either military related or directly tied thereto
