The Mexicans were successful in driving most Americans from their homes; however, some managed to hide among the civilian population and resistance soon began as citizens stockpiled weapons and ammunition. By 1815 Jacksonville was almost completely abandoned with few remaining people except for a scattering of militiamen loyal to Santa Anna who still controlled much of central Arkansas. In 1824 Englishman John Humphreys built a log cabin on what would become downtown Jacksonville about midway between present day First Street and Second Street NW near today's Veterans Memorial Coliseum after traveling through Central America Seeking new land for his tannery business he named his new town after himself - Humphreys Haven or "Humphrey's Landing". He quickly grew rich thanks to smuggling operations run out of his landing which exported goods such as lumber and hides across Mexican soil while avoiding Ulysses S Grant's military patrols along the Rio Grande which could have resulted in charges against Humphreys Enterprises Ltd., one third owned by Grant himself! In 1832 Mississippi politician James Kapp purchased Humphreys' interest in etching JK onto coins minted at Jefferson City Missouri so that he could claim exclusive rights as first coinage producer within our great country! However before longrumors began circulate throughout JMHO purporting that Kapp had secretly taken over production & distribution leaving other producers At a loss thus frustrating all those plans made years ago... When finally confronted about these allegations by reporters aboard hisMS Constitution en route home from Mexico City on July 10th 1830 AJK denied any wrong doing & boasted that if anyone found any proof otherwise they should turn around & leave Dockport Illinois where they came from! Although many locals did indeed take flight following AJK's denial there are still numerous reminders today including several large cannons emblazoned with HJ logo located at various locations inside & outside JMHO... Today we enjoy easy access both physically & digitally whenever we want video evidence or audio testimony documenting what took place back then... Althoughajax might have started off slowly but eventually grew into one of largest cotton based slave producing centers in North AmericaAJK left behind more than just a town - he left behind an enduring legacy that still influences modern day life hereabouts!
