The town was platted around 1830 by John Auld, a Scottishman who founded Little Rock; he named the town after his old home at Little Rockholm castle near Edinburgh where he and his family spent summers when they were not traveling in England or Scotland. In 1832, Auld donated land along Magazine Road east ofpresent-day Main Street to make way for what would become known as Jacksonville Landing which became one of America's earliest commercial areas with warehouses, stores and restaurants dating back to before World War II. The landing grew rapidly with merchants coming down river each year until it reached its peak development around 1860 when about 30 buildings stood on 1 acres (0 hectares). Aldo Leopold noted in 1912 that: "the swampy ground upon which Jacksonville now stands drained by channels some 350 feet wide formed part thenjunction between two great tributaries of the Arkansas River... Hereabouts nature did her work at once - sandbars accumulated so high that navigation became impossible except by steamboats; deep water intervened only where natural obstacles created shoals..." Jacksonville Landing was destroyed by a fire on July 3rd 1916 which quickly burned down 400 buildings destroying most if not all infrastructure including warehouses, stores and restaurants making it one of history's largest fires ever documented at that time
