GUN MAGS HISTORY IN JACKSONVILLE, ARKANSAS The history of gun magazines in Jacksonville, Arkansas began with a small shop called the Mechanic Shop on Main Street in 1887. This shop was started by Mr. and Mrs. Homer Satterwhite who were mechanics. They sold their products from their home on Second Avenue until 1915 when they moved to what is now the old Higbee Building on Market Street. In 1915, the Satterwides purchased land at 610 EAST STATE STREET and built a new store which became known as The Gunsmiths Supply Company. The first issue of GUN Magazine was published in January 1916 under the name “The Gunsmiths’ Gazette”. At this time, GUN Magazine was edited by JOE POSSIBLEY and included articles about handguns, shotguns, rifles and pistols. In October 1919, THE GUNSMITHS SUPPLY COMPANY merged with Sam Giddings & Sons which had been founded in 1909 by Sam Giddings himself. SAM GIDDINGS & SONS continued to publish GUN Magazines until it ceased publication in 1951 when it merged with other publications including RIFLE MAGAZINE and SHOTGUN MAGAZINE to form GUN BOARD magazine Incorporated (later renamed again to ATKINSON PUBLISHING CO.) In 1951, BATTLESTART PUBLICATIONS INC., a subsidiary of ATKINSON PUBLISHING CO., bought DOMINO Publications Inc., owner ofgun mags such as NRA GUIDE TO FIREARMS (now defunct) and PRECISION shooters guide (now defunct). At that time BATTLESTART PUBLICATIONS INC.(later renamed again to ATKINSON PUBLISHING CO.) took over publication of all gun magazines including GUN BOARD magazine which remained an independent company until its dissolution in 1978 resulting in its assets being divided among several different publishers

On October 15, 1907, Jacksonville voted to become an incorporated city; this event marked the beginning of its growth as a leading center for commerce and culture in Central Arkansas during World War I when many businesses closed their doors because they could not find enough soldiers to fight in that war! The post-war years saw more growth as numerous new businesses opened up such as Chevrolet dealership #1 which went into operation on Elm Street just east of downtown; Ford dealership #2 on Olive Avenue across from Community Park; Coca Cola Bottling Company on Beech Street between Third Street East and Fourth Street West; JCPenney Store #3 which opened on Broadway between Elmand Fifth Streets East; Federal Reserve Bank building now known as First National Bank building also known as Supervisors Office Building where Mayor James Meeks served from 1945 until his death in 1978 In 1949 local resident Amos “Bam” Tilden purchased land extending eastward from present day Fourth Street west to White Road Cemetery creating what is now Hammeredown Farms subdivision.; this purchase led to early development around what would become Hammeredown Lakes with homes being built starting around 1951 In 1965 Plantation Drive was dedicated adjacent to White Road Cemetery following plans by then Mayor Artis Gilmore which aimed to improve access to education facilities within walking distance for residents . Today Plantation Drive contains several historic residences dating back to when Jacksonville was a small town while other homes have been replaced with modern structures over time
