Pellets continued to be used for target shooting until 1938 when Nazi Germany began using them to fire artillery shells during World War II, leading to worldwide condemnation and boycotts against German goods among consumers across Europe. In 1945, Japan also switched to pellets for their own wartime military purposes after abandoning firearms development entirely throughout World War II. By this time, however, pellets had already become incredibly popular all over Asia due to their low noise levels (they didn’t emit any sound whatsoever when fired), ease of use (pistols can be extremely difficult or impossible to reload without damaging them), and capability for high-power shots (< 2g). As such, pellets remain one of the most popular types of ammunition available today—in spite of recent concerns over potential health risks associated with their use.* While there are many different types and brands of airguns available on store shelves these days, it’s hard not to think about pellet guns all those years ago when browsing through toy stores or going hunting in your backyard!
