Hot Springs, Arkansas is a small city located in the eastern part of the United States. The population was estimated to be around 100,000 people in 2010. The main industries in Hot Springs are health and wellness services, travel and tourism, and agriculture. The name Hot Springs comes from the springs that used to supply water for the town. Today, most of the water is piped into town from a nearby reservoir. The springs have been used as a source of hot water since 1859. The first settler in Hot Springs was James Sprague who arrived in 1820. Sprague built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1824, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near where today's Main Street is located. This led to an influx of settlers which included many Baptist missionaries who founded churches in the area around 1830-1835. By 1840, there were over 240 people living in Hot Springs with about 60% being Baptists and 40% Presbyterians. In 1865, General James Hance organized a military camp called "Hance's Camp" east of town for training soldiers for World War II when he moved his brigade from Little Rock to Arkansas Valley Military Reservation east of town on July 4th (the day after Independence Day). On October 3rd (the date when Arkansas became a state), General Hance ordered all units under his command to march into Hot Springs so that they could take showers before their departure for war service on November 8th (November 8th has become an annual holiday in Arkansas). On October 5th (October 5th is also known as "Black Friday"), Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked Confederate forces at Fort Smith across the river at Indian Spring Creek while they were taking lunch break; this led to Early's surrender two days later at engagements such as this one which helped lead directly to Civil War victory over Union forces west of Memphis Tennessee on November 11th (November 11th also happened to be National Thanksgiving Day). Aftermath: More than 400 Arkansans were killed including General Joshua Chamberlain; more than 1 million acres burned by Union troops including much homesickness property lost by Arkansans during these battles - mostly rural farmers These events led Congress pass the Sherman Anti-Trust Acton December 15 th 1890 which banned trusts among large businesses In 1911 – President William Howard Taft signed Executive Order No 1094 creating Alabamabuildings Authority meantto control building development within Arkadelphia County only though it eventually lapsed In 1933– Social Security Administration opened its first office here followed by other major offices throughout southern Arkansas During WWII more than 100 men enlisted out of Hot Springs High School Here & some served overseas

The community was founded on the banks of the Little River in 1865 by Colonel John C. Smith and his wife, Sarah Price. Hot Springs was originally named "Emmett" after an early settler. In 1889, the name changed to Hot Springs because of its temperature record set by an American Expeditionary Force during World War I at 109 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius). Hot Springs has been a center for health tourism since it opened its doors to visitors in 1915. It is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Arkansas and ranks eighth nationally as a destination for spa-related tourism according to insights from VisitArkansas Incorporated. The springs are located about 15 miles (24 km) east of downtown Little Rock and 10 miles (16 km) west of Arkadelphia. The springs were first discovered by Europeans in 1693 when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto crossed overland from Mexico into what is now Arkansas while exploring what would become Louisiana Territory. When he reached present-day Hot Springs on July 9, 1693, he named it La Veta de los Reyes Católicos (The Shrine of Our Kings Catholic), after his viceroy’s palace that stood near Barcelona, Spain at that time. After Spanish explorers discovered more water sources along the Arkansas River Valley they called this area “Las Vegas” due to their discovery there by Francisco Vázquez de Coronado on August 25, 1539; however Las Vegas had no real significance until 1812 when General Antonio López Mora established Fort San Carlos en Comalco at what is now known as las Cruces Road just outside present day Hot Springs proper where Mexican traders harbored goods destined for California during the Gold Rush period 1848-1859."
