Polk traded goods with Native Americans at Hot Springs Ford for horses used by Ulysses S Grant during his Expedition against Mexico City; this was one of only two such transactions ever made between American presidents and Indian leaders In 1902, Mayor John Fenton established a municipal school system in Hot Springs with six schools: three primary schools and three high schools followed by an vocational school in 1907-1909 In 1925 Mayor Lambert Withers established a city hall complex including a library and health department Mayor George Dickey renamed the town "Hot Springs" on December 15th, 1951 after his predecessor's death On October 8th, 1990 Big Spring Water Company announced plans to develop an open-air thermal power plant near nearby White Sands National Monument; this proposal met opposition from residents who contended that there were no good sites for such a plant within radius of Hot Springs proper In 2001 Mayor Gene Autry announced he would be retiring at age 75; this gave impetus to then-Mayor Jimmy Grimes to launch an effort seeking renewal of city charter rights A referendum was held on November 2nd 2002 ballots offering voters proposition A – extending mayor authority until 2027 over various issues including land use - while propositions B & C – authorizing formation of citizen referenda governing use or passage of ordinances pertaining to tax rates - failed by wide margins

Hot Springs is named for springs that issue from a small hill in present-day Hot Springs and flow down to a small stream near the town's center. In 1867, General Waddell founded Hot Springs Village as a stop on his theatrical tour of Arkansas. The village contained about 100 people and grew slowly until it had a population of 478 by 1910. The first post office at Hot Springs was established on November 12, 1868. At its peak in 1895, there were 27 mail carrier service providers serving Hot Springs with an average of 3 shipments per day. By 1930, only one provider remained and mail delivery ceased completely in 1934 due to budget cuts following World War II. In 1916, two brothers developed what would become known as White Sulphur Lake which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Arkansas as well as across North America for swimming and fishing. Due to its clear water and easy access through private channels accessed only by boat or plane (and not through public water), White Sulphur Lake quickly became known throughout the United States as one of the most popular hot springs resorts during this time period thanks largely to American millionaire Frank Williams Sr.'s efforts to promote it."
