By 1840, most of this community had moved away because of health concerns associated with arsenic gas produced by nearby coal mines called Arkansas Coal Fields! In 1880, Jacob Asahel Phelps organized an expedition to map and explore new areas within what is now Pulaski County after learning about gold deposits west of his home state of Missouri. His intent was not only to find new mineral wealth but also to establish trade routes with Central America through Mexico City which would improve American goods transportation methods and thereby increase production at Ulysses S Grant's famous West Point Arsenal during the Mexican War (1846-48). Phelps became interested in Hot Springs when he learned that its natural springs could be used as a source of water for irrigation purposes rather than just being used as a thermal spa resort like many others across the country at that time! Phelps purchased 3/8 mile (1 km) east of present day downtown Hot Spring from Elijah Hicks on July 12, 1885 for $5 per acre ($140 per kilometer). He began construction on what is now known as Phelps House - originally called First Presbyterian Church - which ultimately served as both his residence and business office until 1886 when he sold it to George Washington Carver for $10 per acre ($240 per kilometer). At first glance it may seem strange that one man could own so much property in such an isolated location given that development occurred only two miles away at nearby Springdale where many people bought land around 1800s for salt or cattle farming!/ However, since Phelps was very influential early on in Arkansas history he likely had good reasons for owning so much land including good water transportation links and access to markets outside his home state! 'this area became known as 'Phelps Ridge' due to its unique location overlooking all aspects of central Pulaski County.'
