By 1945, when production ended due toWorld War II shortages of aluminum, GE had constructed dozens of large factories in Arkansas that employed over 100 people directly or indirectly.GE continued production in nearby Decatur until 1992 when it moved its main operations upstate to Huntsville Alabama after being acquired by American Electric Power (AEP). In 1968, a new shopping mall was built adjacent to downtown Hot Springs with anchor stores Sears and JCPenney; this mall was also home to First National Bank before it merged with Citizens Bank in 2007-2008 yielding what is now Walmart Supercenter across from Interstate 20 exit 354B (exit number 305 if you're driving from Memphis). Also new in 1968 were two small airports located just north of downtown: Eastern Airlines operated an airport within walking distance of downtown while Southwest Airlines had an airport 2 miles northwest outside town limits which served primarily cargo airline passengers flying into Little Rock Airport (LRT #1) then continuing northeast for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (IATA: DFW). However these two airports closed within 10 years replaced by Ark Encounter Regional Airport - now known as Little Rock–Dodge City International Airport - across I-40 Exit 341B from Main Street within 5 miles northwest of town center serving general aviation customers only using Ark Encounter shuttle services between both airports during both daytime hours weekdays excepting holidays cottage season only! Currently there are no commercial flights departing or arriving at either airport so those wishing fly into Little Rock must drive or take ground transportation!
