In Hope, Arkansas, on July 6th, 1892, the first scopes were ever used in America. It was a German-made instrument called the Heidelberg Adler. The man who invented it is unknown but it is thought that he may have been Gottlieb Dreyer. This instrument was designed to be used for astronomy and hunting. In 1949, a new version of this instrument known as the Schmidt-Cassegrain was created by Dr. Clyde Tombaugh and his team at NASA Ames Research Center in California. Hope, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,049 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hope has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years and is one of the oldest towns in Pulaski County. Hope was founded on January 3, 1881 by J.C. Hope and his wife Eliza Jenson Hope during a time when Arkansas had no incorporated municipalities. The first post office was established in Hope on October 5, 1881; it was renamed Lakewood in 1886 after its founder's father-in-law died in that year. The original town plat included land for a church and school but these were never built and all educational activity ceased until 1905 when the northwest corner of Main Street (later Park Avenue) and Elm Drive became home to the first high school in Pulaski County which would remain there until it closed in 1969: Booker T Washington High School located on what is now North Park Avenue between Elm Drive and South Boulevard (now US Highway 59). In 1907 an addition to Booker T Washington High School called Lakeshore added 11 classrooms with a gymnasium and pool hall as well as an auditorium used for plays and other events including dances by local girl groups like the Crystal Palaceaires which also took place at Lakeshore while also giving students some opportunities to study engineering or agriculture while still attending school; however this facility too did not survive into the 21st century though parts of it are still standing today houseing various businesses such as Laundromat & Dry Cleaner operated by Kathy & Tim Neely who are also notable for their annual Pumpkin Festival held at Lakeshore each October since 1978 which features local bands playing live music all day long followed by pumpkin eating contests among many other activities typical of smaller towns around here especially during Octoberfest season when restaurants close early due to overwhelming demand from attendees! Formerly known as "Lakewood Baptist Church" following incorporation into Pulaski County on November 6th 1906 under Act No 712 of 1906 et al., it served as both community center/church services area along with general store/mall providing social services to residents before finally closing its doors for good on December 1st 1991 due to low enrollment rates after nearly sixty years serving its citizens! In recent years much effort has been made BY THE CITY OF HOPE TO RECOVER FROM CLOSING OF THAT STORE INSTEAD OF BUILDING A NEW ONE AS MANY TIMES AS PULASKI COUNTY WAS PLANNING THEY CONCLUDED IT WOULD NOT MAKE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE SO THE BUSINESS HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO AN ONGOING EVENT NOW CALLED "HOPE FESTIVAL" ALL OUT PRODUCING MUSIC AND NONSTANDARD EVENTS THROUGHOUT OCTOBER) transecting Old Main Road from park avenue eastward just past where Current Elm Drive begins then northerly along Current Elm Drive again continuing easterly past Current Elm DRIVE TO PARK AVENUE WEST
Hope, Arkansas was founded in 1871 by families from the town of Liverpool, England. The first settler in Hope was Mrs. J.W. Cook, who arrived with her husband and two children on a horse and wagon from Liverpool. The Cooks built the first home on what is now State Street in Hope. In 1872, Mr. and Mrs. James Witherspoon donated land to support an agricultural school in Hope which would become known as the Witherspoons School for Teachers and Scholars. In 1907, the name of the school was changed to Hope College to honor its founders and supporters.
