Hope was founded in 1902 by John and Anna (Wiggins) Cook as a cotton plantation on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1907, Hope became an incorporated village with a post office and five schools. In 1913, Hope's first Baptist church was built and the first Methodist church followed in 1923. In 1945, when Pulaski County was created from portions of Conway County, Hope became its third largest town with a population of 709 residents. The population peaked at 1,085 in 1970 but has since declined to 553 residents. Hope was founded by African Americans in 1907 as Hope Station. In 1912, it became Hope School and in 1957 it became Hope Junior High School. The current school building was built in 1984 and serves as both the high school and main campus of Hope Community College. In 2000, Hope won the national award for excellence in education from the George Washington University Institute of Education Studies. Hope has been home to many businesses over its history including Jethro Tull Coffee Company which opened in 1928 and still operates today; First National Bank & Trust Company which closed its doors in 1978 but reopened as First National Bank of Hope in 2009; Mid-America Development Corporation which renovated the original Main Street Baptist Church into a mixed-use development that includes offices, housing units, a hotel/motel, retail stores and restaurants; American Home Products who produces pet food products at their plant until 2014 when they announced plans to close all operations due to economic conditions; BP America who drilled oil wells near Hope until 1994 before mothballing their activities there; Pioneer Natural Gas Cooperative who tanked gas around town for local residents until 2006 when they bought a pipeline from Energy Transfer Partners to ship natural gas south from Texas; Wacoal USA Inc., LLC which manufactures jeans line made outside of Japan until 2004 when they decided not to expand their manufacturing facilities there because of economic conditions also known as "The Jeans Wars." In recent years some new businesses have come online such as Crossroads Lumberyard where lumber is processed into wood frame homes starting up operation in 2009; Hometown Pizza started up shop serving pizza since 2007 with plans expanding throughout Arkadelphia area including neighboring towns such as Mountain View Village and Valley View while other small business owners have set up shop such as Bob's Cakery opening location next door to Walmart - offering pastries such as croissants and doughnuts along with coffee drinks etc.; Arch Coal Records Store open since 2003 selling records from vinyl LP pressing days through digital downloads etc.; Wacoal USA Inc., LLC reopening after being inactive for several years due to lack of demand for jeans lines manufactured outside Japan but this time focusing on Madeira cotton products - opening an office inside Wacoal corporate headquarters); Timberline Golf Course opened 2013 followed by Timberline Country Club later that year - both courses offer nine holes ranging from par 72 yards out through 476 yards out with bunkers varying from 20 feet wide at one hole to over 100 feet long at another (plus driving ranges) making them among the largest golf courses within 200 miles or so of downtown Little Rock
