Hope is the smallest city in Holt County and is home to the only hospital within the county. The community's history dates back to 1865 when it was named for Alma S. Duncan of London, England who donated land for a Methodist church in what is now Hope. In 1886, Hope became an official trading post on the Red River which connected Texas and Arkansas. The post served as a stop on stagecoaches bound for Topeka and Wichita Falls until 1892 when it was discontinued because of lack of traffic. Hope experienced its golden years during World War II when production increased at the nearby DuPont plant which employed over 1,000 people. After the war ended, Hope found itself struggling to keep up with other economic sectors such as agriculture and tourism which declined in popularity after DuPont left town in 1979. However, hope has bounced back since then and has become one of the most significant communities within Holt County thanks to its rich history and vibrant culture. The first inhabitants of Hope were members of various Native American tribes who had settled near present-day White City Creek before European settlement began in 1778.
