They started making pistols and shotguns from 1877 to 1880. From 1881 to 1886, they also began making rifles. In 1889, John Hargrave opened a rifle shop in downtown Hope. This was the beginning of the Gunsmithery industry in Hope. Over the years, other manufacturers followed Hargrave’s example and started manufacturing firearms here too. In 1903, two brothers named Black bought a millinery store on Third Street near State Avenue called “The Bowyer Shop” which housed a forge and an arsenal used for manufacturing rifles and handguns according to town records dating back to 1865 (referring to it as “Natchez Arsenal”). The Black brothers soon turned their millinery store into one of the most prosperous businesses ever established in Hope with a variety of products including Firearms & Ammunition, notions & boots (later becoming known as “Boys Clothing & Shoes”), saddles & bridles (later becoming known as “Thornbury saddlers”), groceries (later becoming known as “Hope Grocery Co., Ltd.), flowers (becoming known as simply ‘Flowers’), eggs (becoming known as simply ‘Eggs’) and many more items until it closed its doors at 1014 S Broadway about 1959/1960 due to lack of customers or competition from larger stores within town limits." As Hope grew, so did its economy with businesses opening up including a bakery and a grocery store. By 1915, the population had reached 775 people. In 1960, Hope merged into Bentonville with 6 other towns in Benton County to form the City of Bentonville. The city has remained an important part of Arkansas ever since with its rich history and vibrant culture.
