Hope was founded in 1892 by Methodist missionaries from Illinois. It became a post office in 1907 and has since been renamed Hope City. The community's first store was built on the corner of Second Street and Main Avenue. The store burned down in 1909 but its contents were salvaged and used to build the first schoolhouse in Hope (now part of the First Baptist Church). In 1912, Hope also had its first doctor, Dr. Rufus Crain. In 1924, Hope became an incorporated city with a mayor and two council members; it lost its incorporation status in 1957 but remains part of Pulaski County as an unincorporated community. Hope has been home to various businesses such as a millinery shop and a grocery store before becoming an agricultural center during World War II when much of Pulaski County turned to agriculture for workers needed by munitions factories or defense plants; production continued until the early 1970s when mechanization began reducing jobs in industry around Pulaski County
