Garfield who died on April 4, 1881 during his campaign for president of the United States in Pulaski County. In 1887, the Post Office moved from Topeka to what is now the town of HelenaWest Helena after it became known as one of the most important railroad towns in Arkansas due to its location on the Arkansas Pacific Railroad's line connecting Little Rock with Memphis and points eastward. The original post office building still stands today within walking distance of all of the businesses located within what is now the town limits including: a grocery store/grocery mart; two restaurants; four bars; an auto body shop; a hair salon; three churches - First Baptist (founded 1861), Beechwood Presbyterian (1892), and Highland Park Presbyterian (1896). In addition to its main trade center role as a railroad town, HelenaWest Henderson also enjoyed some commercial success thanks to its agricultural production which included cotton ginning operations until 1924 and other farming activities until 1978 when mineral rights were bought out resulting in full-time mining operations being conducted until 2000 when they ended following an environmental disaster that destroyed much of their infrastructure yielding little economic return over many years
