Helena West Helena is a small town in Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Mayo Micropolitan Statistical Area. Helena was founded on November 3, 1881 by Helena and her husband John West and their children Ada and John Jr. Helena has been home to more than one million people since its founding. The town's name comes from the first two words in its founders' names: Helena (northern Italian) and John (English). The original settler was Johannes Wilhelm Miller who arrived in 1841 with his family from Germany. He named his new land "Helena" after his wife, Helen of Burgundy. Over time other families followed suit; by 1888 there were 10 settlers living in Helena. By 1905, there were 30 settlers living in Helena. In 1907, the state legislature passed a bill naming what is now Saline County after Battle Creek resident James Waddell Belknap who had died during the Mexican-American War a few years earlier while serving with distinction as colonel of Company K 2nd U S Cavalry Regiment (Custer's Raiders). On July 11, 1907 local residents voted to change their name to "Helena" following approval from the Arkansas Board of Geographic Names which made the change effective September 1, 1907 Helene Township was organized on April 14, 1912 when it split from Benton Township east of Highway 24A . There are no records that show when or how much water became available for irrigation around here but it’s likely that early farmers got help through rainfall brought down from the sky. In 1956 an addition called Ballinger allowed for farming beyond what had originally been allotted for residential development within town limits which increased production significantly – today all that remains of this original farmstead is an old well located northwest of downtown near milepost 121/220 on FM 447

Helena West Helena was a slave of John Wesley Hardin. She was born in 1814, and died in 1861 at the age of 76 years. Helena was one of five children of John and Eliza West Helena. Her father was an enslaved African American man who worked on the plantation where Helena grew up. her mother, also named Eliza, belonged to another enslaved African American woman called Martha.John Wesley Hardin bought Helena from her parents in 1837. He had been interested in purchasing her since he saw her work on the plantation. Helena became his second wife after buying her from Martha in 1838. They lived together until 1862 when Hardin died.Hardin is most famous for owning and managing Arkansas' first white school, which he opened in 1840 as a public school for black students.The first white person to ever teach at Arkansas' first white school was Reverend James Henson who taught between 1840 and 1845 near Little Rock."When I finally got my education," said Henson "I not only learned about North America but I also learned about slavery."Arkansas's first black teacher, Mrs. Smith (1849-1852), taught at what is now known as Central High School from 1850 to 1852 before moving to Harper University where she taught from 1855 to 1860."For me," said Mrs., "the job of teaching Black girls wasn't easy because they were little more than slaves...but it meant that I could tell my daughters how much better their lives would be if they could go to college."In addition to his role as the superintendent of schools for all blacks in Arkansas, John Wesley Hardin also served as a United States senator from Arkansas from 1865 until his death in 1870."He [Hardin] had always been passionate about education and helping Blacks get an education so that they could contribute something valuable back into society," said Representative Bennie Thompson 44th District Congresional Delegate From Arkansas"What we found out during our hearings is that many people were able to learn through education even though they didn't have access to other types of resources like money or friends." hardin left behind a legacy not just for Arkansans but also around the world when he founded The Methodist Episcopal Church World Missionary Conference which aided missionaries throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America
The Helena West Helena area was founded in 1879 by the two brothers, David and Jesse West. The town was named after the two main thoroughfares in Helena – the Arkansas and White Rivers. The town began developing around a sawmill, grist mill, and wagon wheel factory. By 1890, Helena had a population of 350 residents. In 1903, the town became a city with its own government.
