Helena West Helena was a slaveholder and post office in the Arkansas Territory. She was born in 1811 in Bourbon County, Kentucky to John and Susannah (Fenton) West. Helena's parents were peanuts farmers who moved west when Helena was young. They settled in what is now Helena, Arkansas, on a farm that their son John acquired around 1825. The Wests ran a small grocery store until 1830 when they became slaves of John's brother-in-law, Moses Brownell. The Browns had three children: two daughters and one son. In 1850, after Brownell died, theWestphalian family became freeholders of Helena village except for one slave named Minerva who remained with the Browns for life. In 1861, Helena married Colonel George Swayne Bates, an officer of the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He served as general of cavalry on General Robert Ewell's staff at Decatur Mill during the Battle of Pea Ridge and later commanded Union forces at Grand Gulf campaigns in 1862 and 1863. After the war ended he returned to his home state of Arkansas where he founded Batesville and started a cotton gin there in 1865. The Bates family continued to live in Helena until their deaths there in 1901 and 1902 respectively; their daughter Alice also lived there into her nineties. The town remains active today as a bedroom community for Little Rock; its ZIP code is 71901.
