Helena is best known for her role in the Civil Rights Movement, but her story goes back to before that time. She was born in what is now Fayetteville, Arkansas on December 2, 1892. When she was just a young girl, Helena's family moved to the tiny town of Pella,Arkansas where they lived until 1916 when they decided to move again and settle in Helena. Although she only lived in one town for six years, it was here that Helena learned how much can be done with just a little bit of effort and determination. In 1915, at the age of 15 years old, she became the first African American woman to be ordained as an Episcopal priestess in Pella. This experience helped her develop a strong spiritual connection with God which would later guide her during her activism. Helena quickly rose through the ranks of Pella's white community and soon became an active leader within the black community herself. In 1947 she founded The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) out of her frustration with what she saw as discriminatory practices by whites towards African Americans in Arkansas. Her work within the NAACP would lead to her being elected president of Arkansas from 1954-1964 and also help make progress towards integration into society throughout our state. In 1965, after more than 50 years of activism and service to our state, Helena passed away at the ripe age of 93 years old after a long and inspiring life full of adventure and change. She will always be remembered for her work within our democracy and for helping countless Arkansans achieve their dreams both inside and outsideof it; even today we continue to miss her voice both nationallyand locally!
