Helena West Helena is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,555 at the 2000 census. The name means "west of Helena." The first settler in Helena was James Halsey and his family who moved to the area in 1881. A post office called Helena was established in 1886, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1907, the town was renamed West Helena after Helena, Montana, which had been designated as the capital of this territory by Congress on July 16th that year. Its namesake became its first mayor. In 1912, a water tower and pipeline were built to serve the community of West Helena from nearby Bentonville. This served as the main artery for trade within the small community until 1970 when it was replaced by Interstate 30. The original dam also provided irrigation for several hundred acres of land that now comprise much of downtown West Helena. Today part of downtown is considered an historic district including most of what is now west Main Street between 3rd and 4th Streets; east Main Street from 5th to 6th Streets; north Third Street from 7th to 8th Streets; east Fourth Street from 9th to 10th Streets; south First Street from 11th to 12nd Streets; and west Second Street from 13th to 14th Streets. According to the 2000 census, there were 2,555 people living in town limits: 1,853 Jews (or 26% of total population), 1 non-Jewish person (or 0% of total population), 505 blacks (or 11% of total population), 141 whites (or 5%of total population), and 512 Hispanic or Latino residents (or 15%of total population). There are no Native Americans remaining within town boundaries today though some may have lived here during earlier times when their ancestors did too
