They had two children: Johnnie Jr., who died at an early age and Helene II, who is also known as Helen West Helena III. AfterJohnnie's death in 1969, she married again and has been living with her new husband since then. She has four children: Gareth (born 1971), Alexander (born 1973), Kaylee (born 1976) and Tyler (born 1979). Her only grandson is Maximilian Hinson Jr.,who was born in 1990 but lives with his grandmother full time. According to the National Park Service website, "Helena Weston Hodges played an important role in central Arkansas' history during the late 19th century-a time of great change for the state." Hodges served as First Lady of Pulaski County from 1892-1896 and helped push for white women’s suffrage within Arkansas; she also founded what is now Central State University located in Little Rock . When Hodges died on December 4th 1921 at the age of seventy-six years old following a long illness, she was one of only three women ever elected Governor of Arkansas . After leaving office as governor—she had held that post from 1907 until 1915—Hodges resumed her long career as an educator and social worker before dying on October 25th 1966 at Pulaski County Hospital after a long battle with leukemia

In 1916, the first school in Helena opened its doors and increased enrollment even further. The following year saw the opening of a movie theater in the town which continued to grow in popularity until it closed in 1949.In 1932, Helena became an incorporated city and soon experienced rapid progress both economically and politically. In 1938, Mayor John Smeaton declared Helena "the most Progressivesville on the Plains". This statement was short-lived however as World War II led to a drastic downturn for the city during which expenditures plummeted 50%. By 1945, only 10% of Helena's residents were still working within the local economy with most residents relying upon agriculture or other rural pursuits instead. However, during this time period did see some significant improvements for citizens of Helena including new public schools (built 1925-1928) that were designed by architects from Dallas Texas; expansion of businesses such as Ford Motors; additions to both City Hall (1938) and State Capitol (1939), becoming one of only a few cities across Arkansas with both structures built at once; construction of two large hospitals - First Baptist Hospital (1945) & Methodist Hospital (1948); major league baseball being brought to town by now defunct Arkansas Travelers who played their last game at First Baptist Park on April 21st 1947; first electric streetcar system being established between downtown/Southwest side & Northside neighborhoods via streetcars called "The Belle" service starting December 15th 1946
