Helena West Helena is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Port Clinton, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1871 by Helena and James West. The original home of the West family still stands today and is used as a museum. Helena was named for General James Hurlbut who fought against Mexico on the border during the Mexican–American War. He also served as Governor of Arkansas from 1881 to 1889. In 1932, Helena became one of the first towns in Pulaski County to be built on a grid system with central business districts (CBDs). The CBDs were designed to improve economic development and increase efficiency by moving shopping and other services into central areas. The current downtown area, built between 1951 and 1957, contains an old post office, two churches, four businesses, three banks, a jail, and various other infrastructure including a water tower and library building that serve as local historical landmarks. Helena is located at (36 degrees latitude -93 degrees longitude). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 914 people residing in Helena; 344 households were made up of individuals and 228 had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. Helena West Helena is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Helena is named after Helena of Troy, one of the historical figures associated with that state. The first settlers in what is now Helena were white men from Kentucky who arrived in 1836 and named their town for General George Armstrong Custer. A post office called Helena was established in 1841, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1861. In 1871, a group of entrepreneurs decided to build a town on the site of present-day Helena because they saw it as an excellent location for cotton plantations. They name the new town after General John Fayette Cooke, Jr., then the United States Minister to Great Britain. When the mills failed to take off and prices collapsed during the Civil War, many of these entrepreneurs relocated to other parts of Arkansas or Texas. The community declined soon after its founding and disappeared from history until it was resurrected by developer Douglas Fenton in 1978 as part of his plan to redevelop downtown Pulaski County into an urban center focused on commerce and entertainment. The City Council approved plans for redevelopment on May 15, 1978; however, due to economic difficulties encountered by the city during its heyday (the early 1990s), development never happened full throttle until Fenton's death in 2000 led to reintroduction of some redevelopment plans which have since been successful enough that this once struggling city has managed to reopen itself up and become one of Pulaski County's most vibrant communities ever - home not only to over 6500 residents but also some top notch businesses such as Barnes & Noble Books & Music Inc., FedEx Ground Inc., JCPenney Co., Tyson Foods Inc., Hooters restaurant chain restaurants etc... Helena is located just east (and across Valley Road)of I-40 exit 287 where you will see two large warehouses - blue floodlights reflect off them giving you an idea about how large they are!
