Helena West Helena was born on November 3, 1869, in Arkansas. Helena's father was a whitesmith and her mother was of Native American descent. When Helena was two years old, her family moved to Pomona, California. Helena would later state that she loved the sun and the sand but hated school. In 1890, when Helena was thirteen years old, her family returned to Arkansas and she began attending school there. She eventually graduated from high school in 1895. On January 10th 1899, Helena married John Wetherbee-Ferguson at Baptist church in Little Rock. They would have three children: John Wesley Wetherbee-Ferguson (1899-1981), daughter Alice Faye West (1901-1984), and son Timothy Harold Wetherbee-Ferguson (1903-1992). The couple would live in Little Rock until their deaths in 1981 and 1992 respectively. In 1904, after working as a domestic servant for several years, Helena started work as a stenographer for the Arkansas Gazette newspaper. After becoming pregnant once more with John Wesley Wetherbee-Ferguson's child, she took time off from work to raise him alone until he could be placed with his father when he turned eighteen months old on October 11th 1907. Unfortunately for HelenaWesthelena this did not last long as her husband soon found another wife; within six months of theirmarriage she had another child with another man - this time with Theodore Roosevelt Jr.. However due to some legal issues brought about by Theodore Roosevelt Jr.'s marriage it seems that he never received citizenship rights which may have been why Helena never remarried or had any additional children of her own after his death in 1918 at age seventy four years old...
