Helena West Helena was born on October 3, 1881 in the town of Helena, Arkansas. She was the daughter of John Wesley and Emma (Fenton) West Helena. West Helena excelled in school and went on to attend Central Arkansas Agricultural College, where she earned a degree in agriculture. After college,West Helena worked as a cook at Herrington Hotel in Little Rock before moving to Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1907 to take a job as an office girl with the United States Geological Survey. In 1912,West Helena met Edwin "Ed" Whitehurst at a dance and they married the following year. Whitehurst would become her husband for life and they raised their children together. Their home in Fort Smith was built around the marriage altar and became known as "The Ark". The couple had two daughters: Lynda Inez Whitehurst and Pamela Lynn Whitehurst. After years of service within government circles,West Helena retired from USGS in 1978. She continued to live retirement at The Ark until her death on October 25th, 1984. With her death, West Helena left behind an incredible body of work that has been Cowboys & Indians: A History of Western Folklore (1980),edited by Edwin "Ed" Whitehurst; biography of Edwin "Ed" Whitehurst (1986); Chronicles of Old Fort Smith (1981); African American Pioneers Anthology vol 1-2 (1968-1970);Pamela LynnWhitehurst: His Life As an American Girl(1987). Additionally she authored several books including A Place Called Heaven: A History Of TheArkansas Delta(1982),edited by Edwin "Ed" Whitehurst; One Hundred Years Of Southern Arkansas(1985),edited by Edna Ladd; simply entitled 'Helena' :A Writer's Life(1988).

Helena West Helena was born on November 25, 1875 in Helena, Arkansas. Helena's father, John West, was a whitesmith and her mother, Emma East Helena, was of slave descent. When Helena was three years old her family moved to Hot Springs in Central Arkansas. There they continued to live until 1880 when they again moved to Helena. TheWestelinas remained in the town for twenty-six years before moving again to Pine Bluff in 1914. In that same year they purchased a home on South Main Street which they occupied until their death in 1944. Helena West Helena graduated from high school at the age of sixteen and went on to attend Southern Illinois University Carbondale where she earned her degree in education in 1916. After graduating from SIU Carbondale she married Owen Aiken who also attendedSIU Carbondale. They resided for nineteen years at 7245 Park Boulevard before moving to Little Rock in 1938 where they resided until his death two years later. Their deaths left one child, Owen Aiken Jr., who lived permanently in Little Rock after their deaths. In 1943 Mrs. Westhelina awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale to Driscoll Dixon because he had helped found and head the first black student organization at the university named "The Negro Student Union." This event is considered by many historians as one of the most significant moments within African American history because it demonstrated public support for black students despite social discrimination against them throughout America at this time
Helena West Helena was born on October 21, 1825 in Benton County, Arkansas. She married Joshua A. West in 1851 and they had two children: Helena (1853-1927) and Johnathan (1855-1937). Helena worked as a housewife from her home until she retired in 1927. In that year, she donated land to the town of West Helena for its creation.
