Helena West Helena was born in Arkansas on October 15, 1892. Helena's family were farmers and her father, John West Helena, died when she was only five years old. She attended the local school until 1912 when she started attending the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. During this time, Helena met a man named Robert Ziegler who would later become her husband. In 1916, they moved to California where they continued their studies at the University of Southern California. They married in 1919 and soon after moving back to Arkansas they had their first child. When World War I began in 1914 Helena served as a nurse with the war effort and during that time she also became interested in politics. In 1920 she ran for office as a Democrat and won an election as a state delegate for District 12 which included most of eastern Arkansas. After becoming involved in politics Helena decided to run for Congress but lost in 1922 despite coming close twice. In 1924 she again ran for office as a Democrat but this time won an election as a U.S House representative from District 9 which included most of western Arkansas. From here on out her career was largely focused on political representation however it didn't stop her from continuing her anti-slavery activism either; she also served two terms (1928-32) as president of the National Anti-Slavery Society before retiring from Congress in 1934). Throughout her career Helena always retained an active role in public life and is considered one of the most influential women ever elected to Congress; today she remains highly respected within both political and social circles across America due to her work ethic and tireless dedication to promoting human rights issues
