The community was home to a Joplin-based oil refinery until it closed its doors in 2001 due to environmental concerns about hexavalent chromium levels present in the air outlet of the plant

They lived in Washington D.C., where John served as deputy majority whip during the Reagan administration and Helena worked as spokeswoman for the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). They had two children: Barack and Valerie Obama. In 1984 their son Barack graduated from Harvard University and became the first African American president of America's most powerful country - Barack Hussein Obama
