Helena West Helena is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. Helena is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Aurora Combined Statistical Area. The community of Helena was founded in 1887 by John W. White and his brother-in-law, A.P. Healds. White homesteaded on what is now known as eastside Street and built a log cabin which he named "Hafton". In 1903, white settlers met to form the Helena Land Company and platted land around what is today's Helena City Limits; this area became known as "West Helena" after Mrs. Helen West (1860-1940), daughter of John W. White and missionary wife Anna Ketchum (1848-1901). The first post office in West Helena was established in 1904, and remained open until it closed in 1917; that year, it was moved to North Little Rock. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson issued an executive order creating the Arkansas Development Authority which would lead to the construction of new highways throughout Arkansas; this contributed to increased activity within the community of Helena with people looking for new opportunities in an expanding economy. The town prospered during World War I due to its proximity to Fort Smith and its manufacturing capabilities; however, following Victory Over Germany Day in 1918 Major General Harry Lee Dearborn ordered all German American citizens from all US military bases nationwide; this led to significant social unrest within the community which would continue through into the 1920s when most Germans had returned home or were relocated elsewhere within Arkansas or into neighboring Missouri

Helena West Helena was born in 1884 in the town of Helena, Arkansas. Helena grew up in a family of five children and attended school until she was 14, when she married John West. They moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where John worked as a carpenter and Helena took care of their children while he worked. In 1916, they founded the First National Bank of Little Rock. The bank became successful and John served as its first president. The couple had two more children before John died in 1941. Helena continued to work at the bank until her retirement in 1967. She is buried in the First National Bank Cemetery in Little Rock.
