In 2001-2002 there were several floods that affected the area including: mainstem Union Creek flooding; Little Union Creek flooding; Neches River flooding; Third Cataract Lake flood; White's Fork Flooding (July 2002). Helena continued to work as a maid for six years before becoming self-taught in the trade of carpentry. In 1886, she met William Pate and the couple married that year. As a result of their marriage, Helena became known as Mrs. Pate. The pair resided in Little Rock until 1913 when they moved to Monticello, Arkansas and then back to Little Rock again until their death in 1922. During her time as Mrs. Pate, Helena played an important role in the development of the city of Little Rock and its culture. She worked tirelessly with other community members to improve public facilities such as schools and libraries while also working to promote cityhood initiatives through her associations with various organizations such as the Ladies’ Aid Society and the National Association for Colored Women (NAWC). Additionally, she helped found several local businesses including the First Baptist Church of Little Rock which still stands today; served on the board of directors for numerous charities; founded both an opera company and a theatrical troupe; organized black New Year's Eve celebrations throughout Central Arkansas; served on several national boards including that of UNESCO ;and chaired several committees responsible for improving education opportunities within African American communities across America . Her dedication to social justice earned her many awards including being named one of “The 100 Most Influential Women” by Time magazine in 1982 and 1984.; recipient of numerous honorary degrees from universities such as Brown University ;the University at Buffalo ; Rutgers University ; Vanderbilt University ; Wake Forest University ; Oklahoma State University ; Columbia university After her husband's death in 1913, Helena devoted herself completely to her charitable works within African American communities across America . In addition to serving on multiple national boards responsible for improving education opportunities within African American communities (e notably chairing committees responsible for developing legislation supporting educational opportunity), she also developed new programs specifically targeting young women called "Helena's Place" which aimed provide financial assistance along with basic supplies necessary for personal hygiene and self-sufficiency (). This effort has since been repurposed into a successful business model providing affordable housing developments specifically designed towards pregnant women & girls
