The town was named after Helena Waddell, daughter of Major General John Wesley Waddell and wife Marilla Keyes. The first post office in Helena opened on December 12, 1877. The present courthouse was built in 1902 and replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire in 1899. Helena West Helena was born on October 25, 1881 in the small town of Helena, Arkansas. Helena was the daughter of John W. and Sarah (Hutchinson) West. In 1906, Helena married Roy Hinton. They had four children: Roy Hinton Jr., Helene Hinton, Debra Hinton and John Wesley Hinton III. In 1925, Roy died suddenly from a heart attack and Helen became sole guardian of their children and grandchildren. She also took care of their farm until her death in 1984. John Wesley Hinton III grew up on the farm where his parents had been born and raised. He attended high school in nearby Pine Bluff before going to college at Southern Arkansas University in Fayetteville where he earned a degree in history in 1933. He then served as an instructor at Southern Arkansas University for thirty-four years before retiring in 1978. John Wesley also author several books about Arkansas history including A History of Pine Bluff County (1946), The History of Little Rock (1964), The History of White Sands Missile Range (1986), An Illustrated History of Memphis, Tennessee (1992) and A Comprehensive History of Jackson County, Mississippi (1998). Debra Hinton played soccer for the varsity team at Pine Bluff High School while attending college; she later played professionally with the Boston Breakers for three seasons beginning in 1977. HeleneHINTON lived on her father's farm until she married Roy hinton; she continued to live there after marriage until her death from cancer on May 9th, 2003
