Ammunition was also used in war before it became a common commodity. In 1848, three British soldiers were killed by Mexican troops with ordnance they had purchased from a trader on the Texas-Mexico border. Ammunition began being produced in small quantities in the United States around this time as well. The early days of modern artillery were filled with rifles firing lead balls which caused great harm to infantrymen when they hit them directly on the chest or head with accurate fire at ranges up to 400 yards; however, even then rifle bullets could not penetrate very deeply indeed (see Ballistics). As soon as cannons began operation they needed more powerful projectiles to enable them to destroy large numbers of enemy soldiers at close quarters... cannonballs became instead what we now call rounds or shotshells - round objects about two inches diameter made mostly of brass or other heavy metal which project from a catapult or bomb launcher and cause great damage by hitting their target quickly (from Wikipedia). One major development that led to increased accuracy with cannonball projectiles was percussion cap technology developed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte between 1795 and 1800. This improved projectile design created much larger pellets that could travel farther than earlier round designs without detonating prematurely upon impact (see Gunpowder Technology). By 1814 powder manufacture had moved from Leadenhall Arsenal near London to Fort Snelling Minnesota where Captain John Aspinwall fired the first shot of what would become known as American War Hawks during Battle of Lake Superior on July 10th, 1818 (see Military History). The US Navy's USS Constitution launched 106 mortar shells laden with 27 pounds each explosive charge against HMS Foudroyant off L’Isle d’Orléans on October 12th 1808 resulting in 5 kills out of 7 aboard ship including Commander Andrew Chalmers who directed fire according to contemporary reports ([1]). In order for artillery pieces like cannons and mortars able to bombard targets at distances beyond 600 yards (the range capability available today), various methods had to be developed for delivering munitions over long distances using surrogate rounds such as large ‘shotguns’ called ramrods introduced into service towards the end of the eighteenth century but not really used until after1800 [2] . These guns fired slow moving cast iron spheres about one foot in diameter which were inserted through five leather loops onto a pole set into ground spaced about thirty feet apart along an edge Of A Marshland inhabited principally by Weasels & Bears
