Helena West Helena, Arkansas was founded in 1907 by J.B. Wood and his wife, Emma. The town was named after Mrs. Wood's great-grandfather, John Waddell West Helena. In 1916 the West Helena Rifle Association was formed and began to purchase airguns from various dealers in the area. They soon became a well-known force in the local gun community and organized their own show and tournament every year. In 1928 the NRA organized its first national convention in Memphis, TN which included a meeting of the Arkansas Airguns Association where they decided to name their organization the NRA Western Division (later known as NRA Rocky Mountain). This move helped solidify NRA membership within the state of Arkansas as well as nationally. The first major airgun shows were held at Hickory Farm (now Bois d'Arc) State Park located near Little Rock in 1934 and 1935 respectively. These events attracted many exhibitors from all over America who came to compete with one another for prizes including trophies, rifles, shotguns etcetera

Helena West Helena was born on December 26, 1853 in the town of West Helena, Arkansas. She was the daughter of James and Anna (Hargrave) West Helena. Helena had two sisters and one brother. When she was just four years old, her family moved to eastArkansas where they lived for several years before moving back to westArkansas in 1876. They remained there until 1880 when they again relocated to eastArkansas. In 1881, the West Helens became farmers and Helena married George Hargrave who also worked on their farm. They had three children: John Hargrave, James Hargrave Jr., and Frances Hargrave. After a few years of farming, the Wests bought an acreage near what is now called Union Springs which they used as their primary residence from 1895 until 1903 when they sold it to a man by the name of Arthur McCoy. During their time living at Union Springs, Helena served as school board member and choir director at First Methodist Church where she remained until her death on October 2, 1912 at the age of 70 years 5 months. In addition to her husband George Hargrave and daughters John and Frances Hargravie; she is also survived by five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; four siblings who preceded her in death: James (Anna), Anna (John), Alvarus (Rachel), Eliza Jane (James).

In 1934 she published her first book about her experience living in Hot Springs during the early days of its development. In 1945 she published a second volume about her life there after moving away from Hot Springs. Throughout her career, HelenaWest Helena wrote extensively about local history and culture in Arkansas.
