Harrison is a small, rural town in Northwest Arkansas. The population was 2,477 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Harrison County and part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Episcopal City, AR Combined Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Harrison was Captain John Smith on his 17th expedition in 1607. He named it "Harrison" after Sir Henry Hudson's exploration of the New World in 1609-10. The town was platted in 1853 by J W Hogg and A L McDowell. The first post office opened in 1854. The present courthouse was built in 1895. It has been reported that Harrison is home to one of the most unusual historical libraries in America because it contains over 100,000 items from every continent except Antarctica! In 1893, developers J W Hogg and A L McDowell platted what became known as the "Bald Eagle" neighborhood on land they had acquired west of downtown Harrison while working on a plan for a new city called North Little Rock which would encompass all of Northwest Arkansas. The development never came to fruition but portions of what is now Bald Eagle Boulevard still remain today as part of Pennsylvania Avenue NW which runs through North Little Rock and intersects with Interstate 40 just south of downtown Harrison while parts remain today as part of Business Street NW which heads east into North Little Rock before terminating at US Highway 65 just outside the city limits
The town of Harrison, Arkansas was founded in 1872 by James and Martha Harrison. The town is named for General Andrew Jackson, who was the first U.S. president to visit Arkansas. From its establishment until the early 1900s, Harrison was a small agricultural community that relied heavily on production of cotton and hay. However, as the population grew, so too did the need for services such as education and transportation. In 1903, the Harrison School District became one of the first school districts in Arkansas to be created from scratch. The district served a population of approximately 2,000 students at its inception. By 1915, however, the population had grown to more than 7,000 residents and the school district had difficulties maintaining an adequate level of service for its citizens. In 1925, however, Governor John Daniel Murrell approved a plan to create a new county within Arkansas based on recommendations from an advisory committee chaired by Governor George Millington. The county would be named for General Sherman Alexander Polk (1829-1913), who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and played an important role in shaping American policy during World War I
