Gun slings have a long and Preston history in Harrison, Arkansas. The first gunslingers of the area used sling shots to hit their target from a distance. A number of early settlers in the area made their homes around the river where they could shoot game. Gun slings were also commonplace among the buffalo herders and hunters of this region. The first handguns appeared in 1868, and soon after began to be produced for use with sling shots. Soon there was demand for pistols with these features, so more and more gunsmiths started producing them with sling shot-friendly designs. As projectile technology improved, it became increasingly difficult to produce accurate handgun slings without breaking down the shooting process into many small steps. This led to development of high-quality ballistic RET projectiles that could be fired using just one hand while holding onto a grip or stock with two fingers (or even three). With this technology, shooters could effectively fire handguns at distances up to 350 yards using just one hand! Today’s muzzleloaderners and bowyers often usegunslings when firing arrows over long distances. Harrison is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Stonington, Arkansas Micropolitan Statistical Area. Harrison was founded in 1881 by John P. McNaught and his wife Anna Bledsoe McNaught. The first post office was established in Harrison on October 15, 1881. The name of the town was changed to Harrison on December 17, 1881, after Major General George Custer's death in an engagement with the Indian army near Harrisonburg, Virginia. The McNaught family resided here for over two hundred years until their death in 2006. They were buried at Mount Zion Cemetery in Harrisonburg. A local historical society erected a new McLarty House Museum adjacent to their home from money gained from event attendance and donations made by visitor members during 2009-2010 season. In early 2018 a group of citizens began fundraising to purchase and restore an original 19th century farmhouse located about one mile east of town that served as the primary home of pioneer James Henson - one of the original settlers - until his passing in 2013. Located just off US Highway 90 between Pulaski and Clinton Counties on land once belonging to Judge Jesse Watkins (1793-1865), this house had been standing vacant since Watkins' death four years earlier. The history of Harrison, Arkansas can be traced back to the arrival of white Americans in the area in the late 18th century. The first known settlers were Germans, who arrived in 1796 and founded a cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River. By 1814, many Germans had moved to what is now Harrison and established a farmstead. In 1827, landowner James A. Hardesty sold his parcel of land comprising present-day Harrison to John Bates. Bates built a log cabin on the bank of the river and called it Batesville. He used part of his fortune to purchase additional tracts of land in what is now Huckabee County, including portions of present-day Harrison. In 1830, he donated 800 acres (30 hectares) along current-day White Bridge Road to establish what is today Arkansas State University. In 1840, Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased 1,500 acres (500 hectares) from John Bates for $850 cash. As an inducement for settlers to move into this new territory, Forrest offered free transportation and other amenities such as irrigation systems and schools. By 1850–1851, over 400 German farmers had relocated to what is now Harrison County while 100 more people followed in subsequent years. The addition of slaves also attracted early settlers; by 1860 there were 10 slave families living in Harrison County with an estimated 90% black majority population (see below). Harrison became a county seat during Reconstruction when all but one seat within Missouri was lost due to violence or political instability following America's Civil War: Harrison was reincorporated as a county on November 15th 1865 by order of Governor David Beatty Fenton after receiving territorial status on October 3rd that year from Congress at their National Unionist Convention held at Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania). Accordingly much important infrastructure development took place here during those early years: state capitol building was erected on location near where Henderson Road intersects White Bridge Road in 1865; courthouse was constructed northeast corner intersection then northwest corner laterally across White Bridge Road from statehouse; first store/theater opened west side north side east side between 2nd Street & Greek Revival style home at 5235 White Bridge Rd., later evolving into old post office located east side north side near modern day University Park Shopping Center
The town of Harrison, Arkansas was founded in 1872 by James G. Harrison and his wife Amelia. The town was named for the Harrison family, which had preceded it in the area. The first store in Harrison was built on the north side of the river, and later a post office was established on the south side. In 1881, a canal was constructed through the town, providing water to local farms and helping to increase trade with neighboring towns. In 1907, a school district was organized in Harrison, and in 1916 a library was opened. By 1930, only one street remained in town; however, due to increasing population growth, more streets were added over time.
