After the war ended, Reconstruction policy began in America which aimed to improve living conditions for African Americans through education and employment opportunities. This policy failed miserably because most black Americans still couldn’t get ahead financially because of racism within society. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order abolishing slavery in America after much public outcry from abolitionists throughout America- including from Harrison itself! As part of Reconstruction policies across America following these events, many African Americans were deported back north where they experienced greater poverty and social unrest than they did among white American citizens (Bettson). Despite all these setbacks during Reconstruction period in Arkansas history, some progress has been made since then such as passage of desegregation laws statewide in 1967 followed by black mayors taking office beginning with Bill Clinton’s inauguration as governor that year (Fowler). In 1881, Harrison was founded by a group of men led by J.D. Rockefeller. The town was named in honor of General James Harrison, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. The first store in Harrison was opened by Wm. Gentry and Bros., a grocery business, on Main Street. In 1886, the town had only three residents and no businesses when it became part of Pella County. By 1898, the population had grown to over 150 people and there were four stores and six businesses in Harrison. The first post office was established in 1897 (the name change came about due to lack of available letters). In 1899, Pella County consolidated with Callaway County, creating what is now Arkansas’ third largest county by population. However, after only two years as a countyseat, Harrison closed its doors for good because it could not compete with the larger towns in neighboring counties. Harrison remained a small community until World War II when it grew rapidly thanks to new development around the nearby military base which spawned many new businesses including garment manufacturing plants and other related industries during wartime times. After the war ended, growth slowed as most factories closed down or moved away fromArkansas; however, some continue operating today such as Walmart Supercenter located on Highway 7 east of town
