Harrison, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County and part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Amasa Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in Harrison were Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1824. They named their land "Harrison" after Gen. James A. Harrison, who had fought with General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican-American War. The Scottish immigrants built log cabins and early farming settlements before moving on to other areas of western Arkansas in the 1830s and 1840s. In 1881, white farmers began to arrive in Harrison from Texas viathe railroad network so they could purchase land east of Pine Bluff for cotton plantations. By 1910, only 2 percent of Harrison's population was black; most residents were white landowners or employees on farms that produced cotton or corn crops. During World War II, many African American soldiers served in the United States military as laborers or drivers on Whitehall Plantation near Camden (now known as Jacksboro). After the war ended, many veterans returned to Harrison and started anew with new families and businesses. In 1960, when Pulaski County formed out of parts of three neighbouring counties including Cassville (later renamed North Little Rock), much attention was paid to developing a new town within its borders which would be economically prosperous and racially diverse enough to serve as an attractive choice for people living outside Little Rock proper. In November 1977 vote by citizens of Pulaski County resulted in approval for a local referendum proposing that Harrison become its own municipality separate from both north Little Rock and Cassville municipalitieships because residents there felt they needed more control over their community's affairs although it would still be part of largerLittle Rock municipalityality budgetarily speaking since it constitutes less than one percent of revenue generated by those entities combined .
