They built their homes on low hills that overlooked both rivers. In 1821, James Bowie founded Bowie Station on the White River near present-day Harrisonville. He named his station after General Andrew Jackson because he thought it would make an excellent base from which to attack Indian villages in central Arkansas. In 1825, John Wesley Harker became one of the first white men to settle in what is now Harrisonville when he purchased land from Roger Mills for $5 per acre (1/4 mile). Harker developed this property into a thriving community with stores, schools, churches and other public buildings. He also founded what is now North Little Rock High School in 1827 and erected its first building on what are now east side streets near today's market square. Harrison quickly became an important center for commerce and culture in Clarke County due to its location at the confluence of two major waterways - White River and Arkansas River - as well as its easy access to Major Highway 40 (now Interstate 40) which connected all of Arkansas with Mexico City via Dodge City and Texarkana. In 1853, Confederate troops under General Robert Ewell attacked Union forces encampment at Prairie Grove near present-day Arkadelphia while supplies were being transported through Harrisonville en route to battlefields around Memphis Tennessee; this event is generally considered The Battle of Prairie Grove which resulted in Union victory over Confederate forces throughout much of Central Arkansas including Harrisonville
