The society organized a summertime festival that year that attracted over 100 visitors. In 1935, Harrison became part of Little Rock when that city annexed Pulaski County. In 1951, Little Rock erected a statue of George Harrison at one of its downtown streets cornering Second Street (now Water Street). That same year, Pulaski County approved annexation by Arkansas of portions of neighboring Jefferson County; Harrison thus lost its status as an incorporated municipality within Pulaski County but retained its historical significance as a separate settlement within Arkansas’s borders
Harrison, Arkansas was founded in 1881 by J.W. Harrison as a small town on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town quickly grew and became a major center for cotton production and rail transport. In 1915, Harrison was renamed to honor General George Custer, who had been killed in action at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.
