He was an American soldier who fought during the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of Arkansas from 1865 to 1868. Afterward he returned to civilian life and bought some land near present-day Harrison where he erected a log cabin known as "The Old Fort". The fort served as a trading post for many years until it burned down in 1926 due to weather conditions. Harrison was founded in 1859 by John F. Harrison, a native of Pennsylvania. The town soon became a center for cotton farming and later developed as a manufacturing center. In the 1920s, Harrison experienced rapid growth as a result of its status as the site of the first local radio station.
