The Fort Smith Arsenal was a major armament depot in the early years of the 20th century in Fort Smith, Arkansas. It was built between 1892 and 1893 by Colonel John C. Blythe, Superintendent of Indian Affairs under President James K. Polk. The arsenal functioned as a storage and maintenance depot for firearms and ammunition, as well as being used to store military supplies during World War I. During World War II, the arsenals were used to produce munitions for the USAAF. The arsenal also served as an Army Ordnance Depot from 1942 until 1946. In 1949, it reverted to its original purpose as a storage depot for firearms and ammunition before becoming a research center in 1963. In 1971 it became known as the Fort Smith Armory Museum after being donated to the city by Mayor Richard Hite Jr..
Fort Smith is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 97,512 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County and home to the Fort Smith Army Base. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Arkansas was by Frenchmen in 1736. When Spanish settlers arrived two years later, they were not welcomed and expelled by the Native Americans who had lived there for centuries. In 1809, the U.S. military built Fort Smith as a strategic post on the edge of what is now Arkadelphia National Battlefield to keep out Mexican forces trying to cross the Arkansas River from Mexico into Texas. The fort served as a garrison until 1835 when it was abandoned because of lack of necessary supplies and personnel. In 1838, Congress designated Fort Smith as Federal Territory No. 4 due to its strategic location between Memphis and Nashville and its importance in providing defense against Apache raids into southern Arkansas during that year's Indian War (1837-1839). As part of this territory, Fort Smith became known as "the Cradle of Aviation" because American aviator James Forrest flew his first airplane from here on July 3, 1841;[1] however aviation did not become widespread in this area until after World War II when airfields were developed around Fort Smith and other nearby towns such as Little Rock and Fayetteville. The town grew rapidly following World War II with new housing developments being started just east of downtown along Military Trail before moving westward into what is now Northwest Little Rock Boulevard past Central Avenue towards Interstate 40 (I-40W) which crossed over I-20E near present day Garrard Road before terminating at US Highway 25W which runs concurrently with I-40W near Modern Drive NW off Garrard Road near Enterprise Airport outside Of Little Rock today since these areas were annexed by the City ofLittle Rock in 1973 although much development has still occurred within these borders including many large apartment complexes across Northwest Little ROCK Boulevard inside Of The Central Business District located Just south Of First Street NW next To Northwoods Mall
