The original fortifications that were built at the site date back to 1872 when the Territory of Arkansas was created and President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation naming seven military posts along the Mexican border under his command: Ft Worth (now Dallas), Tyler (now Little Rock), Pine Bluff (now Arkadelphia), Jonesboro (then West Helena), El Dorado Springs (now Greenville) and Fort Smith. Lincoln also established another post called Camp Chase near present-day Battle Creek which served as headquarters for Union troops during the American Civil War until 1865 when they were moved south to Confederate territory at Tupelo Bend where they surrendered on April 9, 1865. Following their war service, many Union soldiers who had served in Alabama returned home through Arkansas and began construction on what would become known as Camp Chase which would eventually house more than 12 thousand soldiers during its time as part of United States Forces Southwest Missouri Command from 1917-1921 inclusive.
