Between 1916 and 1918, it housed 2 million pounds (910 square meters) of bombs and munitions; this was more than any other U.S., British or French military installation outside North America...During World War II, Fort Smith played an even larger role as one of two major airfields within Arkansas; it handled over seventy percent of all aircraft flights within the state...After World War II ended, Fort Smith's importance diminished somewhat until it regained some prominence with its current status as both an international airport and a center for commercial development when the city annexed much nearby acreage beginning in 1965."
