In 1836, Fort Smith was founded by the Arkansas Territory Legislature. The fort was located on the White River near what is now downtown Fort Smith. The first fort in the territory was built in 1795 and burned in 1806. The first lock on the White River was built in 1836 by Captain James Fenton and Captains John Dickson and William Tilton. The lock allowed for passage of boats upriver to Fort Smith from Arkansas City. The fort closed in 1865 and most of the property became a railroad stop. In 1907, much of what is now downtown Fort Smith were added to the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1849 it became part of present-day Little Rock before becoming an independent city on January 1, 1907 when it joined Little Rock Township form Mayors Delaney & Jackson Municipal District No. 2 effective February 1st that year In 1933wickley Wickersham donated land east of Interstate 40 between I-40 Exit 134B (now US Highway 65) and I-40 Exit 136A for what would become Bearden Park Blocks Development Corporation with $1 million given by Wickley Wickersham through his son Harry Wickley Jr.. This led to Bearden Park being developed into one of Little Rock's most successful neighborhoods with large yards for recreational activities such as golfing and swimming until it was annexed by Fort Smith in 1987 following a referendum vote by residents As one of America's " Tornado Alley ",Fort Smith experienced more tornadoes than any other major city during both World Wars II (1939 - 1945)and 1964 - 1989 combined... As late as October 1999 tornado damage remained elusive despite numerous reports statewide... Many homes were destroyed or severely damaged during these storms overall but no fatalities occurred
