The name of Fort Smith originated from Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's expedition to Arkansas in 1540. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Smith were French fur traders who built an outpost on the north bank of the Arkansas River in 1681. Grant established a command post at present-day Fort Gibson near present-day Greeneville while he besieged Cairo, Illinois during his campaigns against Native Americans known as the Creek Wars. The town grew rapidly after its incorporation as a municipality on December 3, 1907; it had been organized as Pulaski County about November 30 that year under provisions of Act No. 4of 1907 which created county government reorganization within existing township governments with certain powers vested in Township Meetings but without authority to vote on any questions other than those specifically relating to their own management and organization. In 1911–12 white supremacists led by David Lane attacked African Americans working for local railway company Dallas & Texas Railway northwest of town; approximately 60 people were killed and 150 injured in what has come to be known as Austin's Black Sunday or "the Great Dallas Robbery." On October 14, 1919 Confederate Genovese soldier Oswald Garrison Villard ambushed black troopers attached to Ulysses S. Grant's army near Singing Sands Campaign Site west of town; 11 troopers died including Villard and five others were wounded before they could return fire and drive off Villard's unit; this event remains one of history's most famous race incidents throughout much of America due to public outcry over racism then still very visible throughout much of society today even though such behavior has lessened markedly since then due to advances made by successive generations both black and white
