Fort Smith, Arkansas is home to the National Firearms Museum. The museum has a collection of firearms dating back to 1875. One of the most interesting items on display at the museum is a firearm shirt from 1903. This shirt was worn by World War I veteran and Fort Smith native, General George Custer. The NRA (National Rifle Association) was founded in 1871 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The NRA had its first meeting here in October of that year. In 1923, NRA members met in Fort Smith to discuss how to raise money for hunting and shooting activities across the United States. It was not until 1938 that NRA members decided to put their name behind a trademark for an ammunition product called “NRA” rounds. In 1949, NRA members voted unanimously to create a safety committee so that all future firearms regulations could be coordinated more easily and effectively by the organization. That same year, they also elected Dr. James Wesson as president of the NRA board of directors after he successful ran for office as a Democrat in 1948 but lost against incumbent Republican Congressman Don Hensarling Jr.. After years of growth within the NRA member base, they finally organized their first national convention in 1959 which took place at downtown Ft Smith’s Cotton Exchange Building on May 14-16th of that year with over 2200 attendees including future President Ronald Reagan and many other high-level officials from both political parties including then Attorney General Robert Kennedy and House Speaker Tip O’Neill Sr.. A few years later, in 1963, local gun dealers formed what would eventually become known as the Arkansas chapter ofthe National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSF). The NSF helped support rifle sports events throughout central Arkansas through its sponsorship program which gave registered shooters access to top level competition gear at state fairs statewide as well as granting exclusive membership status to organizations like IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation). In 1969 delegates from 20 states descended upon Ft Smith for what would become known as The Second Amendment Convention when they convened HEREto discuss ways to modernizegun laws around the country with input from both Democrats and Republicans alike! After much deliberation it emerged that there were indeed gaps within current law needs which needed filling before further action could be taken on Amendments #1 & #2 being drafted at this time… these two Amendments did precisely what we wanted them too – To protect our Right To Bear Arms!!! And thus began The Gun Reform Movement!!!

This type of communication could play a role in helping to further reduce shootings and injuries occurrences statewide.
