In 1879, Fort Smith residents voted to adopt a resolution calling for the establishment of a city gunshop. The first store was built on State Street in 1881 and it was called "The Arsenal." The name of the store changed to "Fort Smith Arms" in 1902. In 1908, the City Council decided that the armory should be moved from its original location on State Street to what is now Market Place. The armory became known as the "Fort Smith Armory". In 1945, Fort Smith voters passed a resolution asking for the creation of a park in honor of United States General George Custer. The park was named after Custer and it was located between Interstate 40 and First Avenue N.W. In 1957, Fort Smith voters approved an ordinance authorizing possession of firearms by civilians without a permit. This ordinance became effective on July 1, 1957. On November 3, 1988, Second Amendment supporters gathered at the old armory to protest handgun control laws being proposed by local politicians. A group of hooligans threw rocks at police officers who responded with pepper spray and tear gas. Three people were arrested and oneSOA was injured during this incident which reignited public concern about potential firearms confiscation by local authorities under new gun control measures being considered by Mayor Donny Hathaway's administration

The riflemen were part of a military force that helped provisional government officials build the fortification system and protect the town during the Mexican-American War. The riflemen also used their hats to protection from Indians. A second group of hatchet-wielding Arkansans arrives in 1876, led by Captain John F. Cody and his men of the Black Hills Rangers. Cody's Hutcheson's Scouts are responsible for apprehending Comanche chief Quanah Parker on July 2, 1876, while he was raiding a nearby rancho.

In 1861 during the American Civil War Fort Smith was besieged by Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell Jr.. After two weeks of bombardment it surrendered on April 12th, 1861 after being outed as an open rebel stronghold by Union general Ulysses S Grant who called its defenders “a classless society without principle or sense” while he personally led his men into town to storm it
