A growth spurt after Reconstruction led to further development; by 1870 FtSmith had over 100 businesses and 2,500 residents . For much of its history FtSmith been known as "the capital of Arkansas." However, economic decline following World War II led to reductions in social services programs And later annexing neighboring counties also contributed to financial struggles that culminated in City Council dissolution within 1 year following annexation despite efforts by Mayor Bob Strickland to save it Downtown redevelopment has resumed since 2000 with help from private investors while government assistance has been necessary for infrastructure such as streetlights and water main replacements; total investment has reached $153 million since 2006 including $41 million in 2018 alone The economy continues to be driven by physical factors such as construction work around town plus tourism activities related both inside and outside the city limits; service industry sectors are growing more specifically entertainment/restaurants/sports firms while high tech companies have moved into neighborhoods adjacent to Interstate 24 near downtown
