Fort Smith, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1853 by Colonel James Fayette and he named it for Fort Smith, Texas, then part of Mexico. The first store in Fort Smith was built on Main Street in 1853. A post office called Fort Smith was established in 1855, and remained in operation until 1893. In 1907 the name of the city was changed to honor General Smedley Butler after his victory over Mexican forces at San Jacinto Bridge. In 1912 the street names were changed back to their original forms when Fort Smith became an all-white city under white flight from lynching during Reconstruction. In 1950 Fort Smith experienced its most significant event when black students who had been expelled from Little Rock Central High School integrated into nearby White Hall Preparatory School; this ultimately led to integration of all schools in Pulaski County through negotiations between school board members and local philanthropists such as J.B. Stroud and Robert Moses who donated land for new schools. The fortifications around City Park were updated over time with many additions including a fire station (1951), a library (1963), a hospital (1973), an amphitheater (1981), and now serves as the centerpiece of downtown redevelopment which includes numerous shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife venues along with new housing developments focused on arts and cultural activities rather than development solely for profit or residential uses within walking distance of central business district located off University Boulevard & Interstate 45 North). The first white settlers arrived in 1827, and by 1830 Fort Smith had become a thriving city. The town's growth continued during the 1840s when it became the capital of Arkansas. In 1846, Fort Smith was renamed after General James K. Polk because of his role in the Mexican-American War. However, Fort Smith's growth slowed during the 1850s as cotton farming became more important in Arkansas society. By 1870, Fort Smith had declined significantly and became an agricultural community with few industry options. However, during Reconstruction Fort Smith regained some of its former glory as a center for trade and cultural exchange with Missouri City, Texas (now Houston). In 1932, Fort Smith was again renamed after General Polk when he was posthumously awarded the Ulysses S. Grant Award for Services unto America at a ceremony at West Point University School of Military Science. Today Fort Smith is an important regional center and serves as an economic engine for much of northeastern Arkansas
The oldest settlement in Fort Smith, Arkansas was founded by the Comancheros in 1827. The town was first known as "Cheyenne" and would remain its name until it merged with the city of Fort Smith in 1907. The city's incorporation happened on November 15, 1907.
