In recent years much of the commercial activity in Forrest City has taken place outside of its boundaries due to Interstate 24 which runs through the town limits along its east side; however, some small businesses still operate within city limits including a tire store and one convenience store called Walmart. The largest employer in Forrest City is the Arkansas State Highway Administration which employs over 100 people including 40 mechanics who service I-24 traffic between Fort Smith and Little Rock
