Forrest City is a census-designated place in Barbour County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,717 at the 2010 census. Forrest City is part of the Little Rock–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known settlement in Forrest City was made by two men, brothers Jesse and John Forrest, on December 5, 1867. They built a small log cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River. The FORREST CITY COUNTIES were organized February 4th 1868 and named for General David Ewing and his cavalry column which destroyed Fort Smith November 25th 1864 while invading Texas. The post office at Forrest City was established on December 2nd 1868 and operated until it closed on October 14th 1880. From 1870 to 1890 there was only one store open in town - A & J Wagon Works. In that time period about $4,000 worth of goods were sold at this store alone! When railroads arrived in the area in the early 1800s they had an immediate impact on local businesses as passengers began using them to move goods from states such as Missouri and Kentucky to southern Arkansas. This increased traffic caused stores to close their doors and entrepreneurs started new businesses with limited resources such as tailor shops, grocery stores, hotels/motels etcetera necessary to support such an influx of customers
Forrest City was founded in 1872 when a group of men led by Colonel James A. Forrest decided to move from Pulaski, Tennessee, to what is now Arkansas. The town was named for General Robert E. Lee, who was then in exile in Virginia. In 1881, the town's first post office opened and it continued to be called Forrest City until 1907.
