Forrest City is a small city in Clay County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,975 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Forrest City is home to Forrest University and the Arkansas Department of Correction. The first settlers in Forrest City were Quakers who came there in 1879 from nearby Fort Smith. They built a log cabin on what is now Sully Field Road. The town was named for General John Fenton Forrest, an American general and Confederate officer who fought against Union forces during the American Civil War. In 1915, the Post Office changed its name to Forrest City after General Forrest's death. The Arkansas Department of Correction operates a jail here which was one of two jails opened in Arkansas by Governor Orval Faubus following the 1989 prison disturbances that began in Arkadelphia and ended with the death of three inmates. In 2001, Mayor Jerry Jenkins announced plans to build a new recreation center within the city limits that would become home to both Forrest University Athletics and other community organizations as well as house 10 units for low-income residents who cannot afford housing elsewhere within city limits or outside of Little Rock metropolitan area.. Funds for this project were obtained from proceeds from sales of land surrounding the old Recreation Center site which had been used as part of development for a Walmart store complex adjacent to it

Forrest City is a small city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 681 at the 2010 census. Forrest City is part of the Little Rock– Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded on October 15, 1871 by George Prentice and his brother-in-law William Davenport. The first post office in Forrest City was opened on December 12, 1871. It was renamed Fort Smith in 1902 after the capital of Arkansas, which then became Little Rock. Fort Smith grew rapidly due to its location near the center of what would become an important cotton trade route between Memphis and St Louis. The city's growth continued until World War II when it suffered significant damage from bombing raids by Japanese forces during the Battle of Bataan Peninsula. After the war, Fort Smith began to decline as a result of population loss and a lack of industry along with rising costs associated with postwar reconstruction efforts in Arkansas. However, Fort Smith regained some popularity through tourist attractions such as its downtown park and Faulkner Museum of History and Art (now known as Sam Nunn International Airport). In recent years Fort Smith has seen growing revitalization effort spearheaded by Mayor Rick Warren with support from local businesses including REI Rancho de las Palmas Casino Resort & Spa and Blue Moon Brewing Company
